How to Request Halal Meals on Major Airlines: Deadlines, Codes & Secret Booking Tips

There is nothing quite as disappointing on a 12-hour flight as hearing the flight attendant announce that the only meal options remaining are non-halal beef lasagna or pork sausages. Even worse is discovering your requested special meal was never registered by the airline system.

Securing a certified Halal meal on international flights is straightforward when you understand how airline catering systems operate, what IATA codes mean, and how to double-check your booking before departure.

1. Understand Airline Special Meal Codes (MOML)

International airlines use standardized 4-letter IATA codes for special dietary requests. When booking or managing your flight online, look for the following codes:

  • MOML (Muslim Meal): The official code for halal-certified meals. Contains no pork, pork by-products, alcohol, or non-halal meat. All meats are slaughtered according to Islamic rites.
  • HNML (Hindu Non-Vegetarian Meal): Useful fallback in emergencies on certain Asian or Middle Eastern carriers if MOML is unavailable, as it contains no beef or pork, though chicken/mutton slaughter standards vary.
  • VLML (Vegetarian Lacto-Ovo Meal) / VGML (Vegan Meal): Excellent fail-safe options if halal meat is unavailable. Contains plant-based ingredients, grains, vegetables, and fruit without alcohol.

2. Know Airline Standards by Carrier Region

  • Middle Eastern & Southeast Asian Carriers: Airlines based in Muslim-majority nations—such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways, Saudia, Oman Air, Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines, and Royal Air Maroc—serve 100% Halal-certified food as standard across ALL cabins. You do NOT need to submit a special MOML request when flying on these airlines.
  • European & American Carriers: Airlines such as British Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, Delta, United, and American Airlines require you to explicitly select MOML in your booking portal at least 24 to 48 hours prior to flight departure.
  • East Asian Carriers: Japan Airlines (JAL), ANA, Korean Air, and Cathay Pacific offer high-quality MOML options prepared by certified halal caterers (such as Fukuoka Halal Catering or TFK Halal Kitchen), but MUST be requested at least 48 hours in advance.

3. Essential Rules to Ensure Your Meal Arrives

  • Rule 1: Submit your request at least 24–48 hours before scheduled departure. Special catering orders are locked into airport kitchen dispatch sheets 24 hours prior to flight prep.
  • Rule 2: Verify on code-share flights. If you booked through Delta but the flight is operated by Air France, log directly into the operating airline's website with your 6-character PNR code to re-select MOML.
  • Rule 3: Confirm at check-in. Ask the counter agent at airport check-in to confirm your MOML code is printed on your boarding pass (it often appears as 'MOML' or 'SPML').
  • Rule 4: Pack backup non-perishable halal snacks (such as nuts, protein bars, or dried fruit) in your carry-on bag in case of unexpected flight delays or aircraft swaps.

Summary

Taking a few minutes to check your booking portal and verify the MOML code ensures you enjoy delicious, hot halal dining at 35,000 feet!
